The top of New Jersey:
High Point
Elevation:1,803 feet
Location:near Colesville, NJ
Date:10/12/2002

The drive up the Delaware Water Gap was scenic but short. We passed through a couple small communities, including Milford, which was hosting the Black Bear Film Festival this weekend.

Access road from the parking lot to the monument tower.

We arrived at High Point State Park about 10 minutes before the gate opened. We parked across the street at the visitor's center (closed at this hour), read a few signs, and took pictures of the thick fog. No vistas today. Promptly at eight a ranger opened the gates and we drove to the vacant lot at the highpoint monument.

From the parking lot we couldn't even see the tower (which at 220 feet, is actually the tallest monument structure on any of the 50 state highpoints), due to the thick clouds. The tower was closed, but we walked around the base examining signs depicting the views on a clear day. In the early morning wind, drizzle and clouds, this extremely civilized highpoint felt very remote.

Next we headed towards Connecticut.
