Coming up from Connecticut's south slope of Mount Frissel, we drove up a valley, crossed the Appalachian Trail, and then into South Egremont were we stopped for lunch at a sandwich and coffee shop. Besides sandwiches, we picked up a couple warming cups of "steamed caramel apple cider". Then we just headed north on US 7 to the Mount Greylock State Reservation.

We drove up the summit road in a thickening cloud cover, barely able to see 30 feet ahead of us. We passed a few backpackers and day hikers resting at road crossings of the many trails in the area. Once again, from the parking lot we couldn't even see the summit monument. The Appalachian Trail comes right to the summit of Greylock, so this became the second time in one day we had walked on the AT, and in two different states.

After a few pictures around the monument (originally a light house, but now a war memorial) we headed into the Bascom Lodge for shelter from the wind. We noted a few hikers warming themselves by the fireplace and I bought a few postcards showing an aerial view of Mount Greylock on a much less cloudy day to send to my grandparents. Finally we headed back down the mountain and on to Auburn, MA to spend the night before heading to Rhode Island.
